Disruption

When I first saw Oprah Winfrey, an American talk show host and television producer, casually interviewing a guest at her sprawling garden, I was mesmerized.

I like Oprah’s ease and eloquence as she navigated the intellectual conversation.  Most of all, she could ask difficult and personal questions that would otherwise have been awkward if it weren’t designed for an international TV program.

I wanted Oprah’s job. In fact, I fantasized about it. I didn’t like the frills that went with her work, such as the humongous production details involved, the long line of staff, the cavernous studio or her fame.

I just wanted her easy rapport with people and getting paid to interview interesting personalities. Being a talk show host sure is a good excuse for a casual tete-a-tete with anyone.

Unfortunately, at that time, I was nowhere near where I wanted to be. I was then a mousy looking nerd who wore thick eyeglasses,  anxious and insecure around others, an introvert lacking foresight, continually glued to the computer screen and writing on just about any subject except myself.

DISRUPTING THE FAMILIAR
Have you heard of DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION?  It is when someone comes up with disruptive ideas that challenges the traditional way of doing things and usual thought processes to come up with innovations for business or industry.

Well, I thought it was a good idea to DISRUPT MYSELF in order to break into a new field and achieve something better, something wonderfully different.

Just like a startup, unless we disrupt ourselves, we get stuck in the same groove of life, doing the same things and getting the same results. If we forget to innovate on ourselves, we fall into the doldrums. This is when we start asking existential questions which don’t really alleviate our feeling of being stuck in the old pattern of existence.

So, I did something that was so unlike me — I suddenly went on a “vacation” alone in Singapore, Johor Bahru, Hong Kong and Macau with no itinerary during the last week of December.

Yep, I spent money just to be able to think clearly, hoping that an overseas setting would do the trick. I traveled to be able to evaluate my life, and find a way out of this vicious cycle of mediocrity that’s been strangling my spirit.

But as my plane landed on the tarmac of the Changi airport, I had a moment’s surge of panic. I thought to myself,  “what the hell am I doing here?! It’s the time of year when people are suppose to be with loved ones and bring holiday cheer to family and friends.  Not fly around places trying to find some intangible (God knows what) answer to my soul’s yearning.”

All I did during that jaunt was watch foreign revelers walking merrily on their way to whatever festive occasion they needed to go; while I was roaming their streets trying to find my better self. It was the first time I truly felt alone and isolated.

But I was determined to break the pattern of drowning in my usual self. I had to find a way to drop the old reality.

I felt that doing something radically different allowed me to stretch and grow.

During the foreign trip, I gave myself tons of time to think, question my old philosophies, redefine passions, contemplate every aspect of my life and prayed for a breakthrough.

I don’t remember exactly how it happened, but  after that experience, I started a podcast. Although the office where I work wasn’t exactly elated at first by my new interest. However, they saw that clients interviewed were receptive to the free publicity gained by guesting in the program. Eventually, the office supported my endeavor.

THE INNER SPACE
Among the interviewees, there was one which significantly shifted my work perspective and what I should be doing with my life.  It was the interview with Miss Becky Ortega, senior teacher of Brahma Kumaris, at Inner Space.

I came across Inner Space office during a lazy Friday afternoon while I was trying to locate the comfort room at the 3rd floor of Medalle Building, Osmeña Boulevard in Cebu City.

I just came from Watson’s Pharmacy and wanted to relieve myself. You would certainly miss the office if you were talking with someone while walking through the hallway. It had a nondescript door and the paint on it somehow  blended with the wall. Everything about it was ordinary except the signage on the door which read INNER SPACE.  It peaked my interest.

“What is this place?, I asked the lady at the reception desk.

I learned that “The Inner Space” is a meditation and personal development centre which is often referred to as a place where you can relax and recharge. All activities are free of charge.

I made sure that this wasn’t a religious group or a cult before I decided to come back the next day to interview Miss Ortega and join their meditation session.

Meditation or more specifically Raja Yoga for the Inner Space participants is a yoga intended to achieve control over the mind and emotions.

The main purpose of meditation is to calm the mind in order to eradicate mental discomfort and be able to attain a worry-free state of being. Otherwise, if the mind wanders and focuses on the negative things in life, it would be difficult to attain peace and happiness. Through constant meditation, clarity of mind is attained.

According to Miss Ortega, we create an inner space to discipline our mind regardless of the external circumstances. With meditation, we eventually eradicate the causes of all our suffering by detaching ourselves from our desires and live in the moment, go with the flow and just be grateful for whatever comes our way, she said. This way, we experience a permanent kind of inner peace. When there is inner peace, we tend to attract good things in life.

Did I get the things that I wanted because of the disruptions that happened to me ? Yes, of course, and other delightful unexpected outcomes!

When I decided to change the way I think and do things, my circumstances changed for the better.

And because of how minor disruptions have caused positive changes in how I approached situations and circumstances, I prayed for a bigger disruption. Not just in one area of my existence. I needed a total overhaul of my life.

A disruption could be a person, an event or a crisis.  I honestly wasn’t expecting COVID 19.

STARTING ANEW
But in 2020, COVID 19 made people rethink everything they were doing with their lives. So I’m not complaining.

In fact, I am happy that COVID 19 happened. I wasn’t pleased with the way things were.  And if a crisis was the only way to turn the tide, I was willing to take that risk.

You see if you asked the universe for something. It will give it to you. You just don’t get to choose how it will be delivered. So, I was prepared for the unexpected.

Unlike most people, I was excited about the lockdown in Cebu last year because I knew I was getting the change I’ve always wanted.

Gradually, a shift in my reality occured. One by one, the situations and circumtances that I requested I got to experience, except for one. In place of that one unfulfilled wish, the Universe gave me something much better — so much better that I would have preferred it over my original wish if I knew then what I know now.

I talked to an officemate early this year about that one situation we wanted to experience which finally happened.  She said, it’s feels surreal to have your prayers answered — “your heart feels expansive, full of joy, inspired and blessed.”

That’s the same way I want you to experience this year and for years to come.

I talked about “DISRUPTION” in this article because I could be that “DISRUPTION” in your life  — the person that challenges your traditional way of doing things and usual thought processes.

Think about that possibility. What if you are given this one chance to overhaul your personal narrative?

This disruption could help you hack into your dreams,  so you can achieve something better, something wonderfully different with your life.

Felita thrives in the new normal

Indeed, life and commerce have significantly changed as businesses find new ways of operating amidst COVID 19.

Many MSMEs now accept new business concepts and have gotten past the so called old “brick and mortar” mindset to survive.

If there’s anything good that came with the pandemic, it is the realization by many of the benefits of digitization.

As an advocate for digital transformation, I have personally experienced the difficulty in  convincing our entrepreneurs to adopt digital. Perversely, COVID-19 has effectively forced everyone to fast track digitization into their businesses.

While some local companies still struggle, one Cebu based company successfully translated its business online.

Entrepreneur Felita Lubon with children

FRL Trading, a start-up selling agri-based products, diversified to producing washable face masks and running a grocery delivery service online last year.

Proprietor Felita Lubon said that although her company earns well producing corn coffee, turmeric and ginger tea, she saw the high demand for washable facemasks and decided to look for good needleworkers in the mountain barangays of Cebu.

“These needleworkers are happy that they earn income from their work and are able to support their family despite the lockdown in 2020,” Lubon said.

At the height of the COVID crisis, FRL Trading produced 6, 000 to 10,000 facemasks a day for local and international buyers.

In late April last year, Lubon noticed the huge volume of people who have been forced to stay home and were unable to do groceries as well as drivers who were suddenly rendered jobless.

This crisis gave Lubon the idea of establishing an online grocery delivery service that brings supermarket items to those compelled to stay home and give jobs to drivers who are out of work as well.

At the height of the pandemic, Lubon’s grocery delivery service received an average of 100,000 online orders a day.

FRL Trading is currently digitizing its agri-business as it is one of the SMEs in the country that has joined the online platform of UnionBank GlobalLinker.

The UnionBank GlobalLinker is an SME ecosystem built for the ever-growing digital lifestyle.

Felita Lubon is also a beneficiary of the  Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) One Town, One Product (OTOP) program for entrepreneurs who engage in business within the value chain of OTOP products (raw material suppliers, processors, distributors, retailers, manufacturers).

Lubon is also a graduate of DTI’s Kapatid Mentor Micro Entrepreneurs (KMME) program which helps MSMEs scale up their businesses through mentoring on different functional areas of entrepreneurship, produce the right mindset and business know-how.

DTI also assists MSMEs in product development, design, packaging, standards compliance, marketability, production capability, brand development, among others.

In the coming months, DTI will hold most of its trainings via video conferencing to comply with the new normal restrictions.

For remote barangays where technology may not be accessible, DTI may hold seminars in gymnasiums, multipurpose buildings but with limited number of participants as to comply with the social distancing protocol.

Meanwhile, DTI is open to using other viable means to reach out to MSMEs in the countryside such as radio and comic strips written in the local dialect.

To know more and be part of DTI’s trainings and seminars, DTI encourages small business owners to contact any of the DTI Central Visayas Provincial Offices:

Creating abundance with the heart

I have deferred writing this blog post for several weeks now.

I didn’t want to seem very odd for you because this article is kind of out there.   But then again, with a strange name like mine,  how can I expect you to think otherwise?  Of course, this is just one of my flimsy excuses to delay the inevitable.

It appears that I’m strategically placed to take on this uncomfortable responsibility of smashing obsolete paradigms, breaking toxic beliefs and bringing in vital information that most people would not bother to consider.

Like I have said before, nothing is a coincidence. I have been positioned in such a way that I am able to write what needs to be communicated.

I am neither religious nor moralistic, but I tend to think differently, sometimes way too differently than most people. I am also very much open to new ideas and better ways of doing things.

These ideas which interest me have scientific basis. That’s probably why I am a good vehicle to write on the subject of feeling based prayer to obtain abundance.

Prayer is an essential part of life. We all pray for blessings, strength, forgiveness and to be one with our God.

I am not in any way trying to impose anything on you. So, let’s just pretend that the only purpose for this write-up is to hone this scribe’s skill and maybe for you to acquire some interesting information on the side.

CONNECTION BETWEEN HEART AND MIND
Before I begin, allow me to show you  a video of former geologist and best selling author Gregg Braden explaining the mind-heart connection. He also explains how heart-mind coherence is important not just in relieving stress but also in obtaining your heart’s desire whether it be material wealth, good health, perfect relationship.

ANATOMY OF A PRAYER
You have been faithful to your financial goals. You have done the hard work. You continue to save money and invest in various financial vehicles. Now you are asking the Divine Spirit for more guidance.

Have you been asking God the same thing over and over yet nothing tangible is happening in your life?

Have you beseeched Heaven for things that mortals usually want: wealth, abundance,  love, physical and emotional healing ?

Have you tried various positions of imploring the Supreme Being: standing up, sitting down, kneeling, bowing down but still these do not work in your favor?  Is it better to pray in a church building or out in nature, you ask? Should you do it in the morning when you get up or at night before you go to bed for your prayer to be effective?

Far too often, many believe that if they do not say exactly the right things, or pray in the right position or do it in a holy place, God will not answer their prayer. That’s a whole lot of crap, if you ask me.

God has created a benevolent universe that exists to take your orders; whatever you want, you get as long as it doesn’t go against the laws of nature.

Yes, everyone deserves the best life can offer; even those you call “sinners”. Why would the God of love who gives humans free choice punish them for making mistakes?  It just doesn’t make sense to me or to any logical mind.

It just seems to me that humans are the only ones doing the punishment to themselves and to other people.

Karma isn’t punishment by the way; it is merely how the universe works — what you sow, you reap.

So, why didn’t you get what you wanted from God? What went wrong?

Hasn’t it crossed your mind that you may have sabotaged yourself ?

Your thoughts, words and feelings are contradicting each other. You are asking for something but you feel (subconsciously)  that you don’t deserve to get it. What’s worst is you even wrote down the reasons why you can’t have what you begged God.

You are sending mixed signals. Your thoughts are not in harmony with your feelings. How is the universe suppose to take your order? Of course,  it will follow the strongest signal coming from you — your emotions.

THE LOST MODE OF PRAYER
Have you heard about the water experiment of Dr. Masaru Emoto?

Masaru Emoto carried out very interesting experiments with water at critical point for freezing. He claims that words expressing emotions have effect on the crystals formed in the process.

Emoto also reports that words with positive emotional contents produce beautiful crystals and those with negative emotional content generate ugly ones.

This experiment proves that humans can affect their environment through words and emotions.

Gregg Braden, a former geologist and currently best-selling new age author, explained  it very well in his book “Secrets of the Lost  Mode of Prayer.”

This mode of prayer is based on the lost gospel of Thomas because it is believed to be the actual words of Jesus as he was teaching those around him how to use the power of emotion in his life.

To unleash the force of the Divine Matrix in your life, first you have to understand how it works and science tells you how this works. Secondly, you must speak the language that the Divine Matrix recognizes.

So, what did Jesus and other spiritual masters  say about this universal language of the Divine Matrix?  They understand that there is a field of energy around us and we have the language to use that field.

In the lost gospel of Thomas there are two very important keys we need to remember: one is “feeling is the prayer”,  two is “we must feel as if our prayers have already been answered.”

As Gregg Braden says, if your thought and emotion become one and at peace with each other,  it creates a potent language of feeling that the Divine Matrix recognizes. The field around you does not recognize your voice (so no amount of well placed words in a prayer can do the trick); the field recognizes only the electrical energy emanating from your heart. So when you create the feeling in your heart as if your prayers have been answered that creates the magnetic waves that bring the answer to you.

In the King James version of the bible, John 16:23-24, Jesus says, “whatsoever you ask in my name, he will give it to you. Hitherto have ye ask nothing in my name: ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”  This is the edited version. Unfortunately, the translators of the original document in Aramaic deleted the sentences that tells you how to ask.

In the retranslated version of the Aramaic document  by Neil Douglas Klotz with the previously deleted sentences included, it says
“Jesus said: All things that you ask straightly, directly, that you desire – like an arrow to its mark, like birds to their watering place— from the Breathing Life of All, Father-Mother of the Cosmos, with my shem— my experience, my Light and Sound, my Atmosphere, my Word: from inside my Name— you will be given. So far you haven’t done this.

So ask without hidden motive and be surrounded by your answer— be enveloped by what you desire— that your gladness be full— that the joy of goals met here may continue its story to perfection in Unity— that the animal life in you find its lover in the Cosmos.” This is the full text with the instructions on how to ask the holy Father.

Ask without attachment to the outcome; feel as if you are surrounded by the answer  and enveloped by what you desire whether it be wealth, abundance, a fulfilling life.

FEEL AS IF YOUR PRAYER HAS BEEN ANSWERED
Rather than the sense of helplessness, a feeling-based prayer acknowledges your ability to communicate with the intelligent force that most of us believe in. It is a full-body experience, involving all of your senses to control your destiny.

Without any words, without any outward physical expression, this mode of prayer simply invites you to feel a clear and powerful feeling as if your prayers have already been answered. Through this intangible “language,” you participate in the healing of your body, the abundance that comes to your friends and family, and the peace in your country.

You are always feeling in each moment of your life. While you may not always be aware of just what you’re feeling, you are feeling nonetheless. If feeling is the prayer and you’re always feeling, then that means you’re always in a state of prayer.

I know that you are a highly emotional person, my friend, and you feel deeply for everyone and almost every issue in this world. Remember, this makes you a very powerful force that can create abundance for yourself, change people and the world we live.

Please be careful what you pray for because you just might get it.

Everyday, you’re always sending a message to the supreme Being whether you are aware of it or not, signaling healing or disease, peace or war, honoring or dishonoring your relationships with those you love.

Again, please be careful what you pray for it could affect not just you but also other people.

As what new age philosophers would say, “Life” is the Mind of God mirroring to us what we feel deeply —what we’ve fervently prayed.

Tatah designs her own business

To survive the highly competitive fashion industry, ATE (Alter to Enhance) by Tatah focused on its forte : a ready-to-wear women’s apparel concept of zipper-less, buckle-less, and no buttons that is friendly to all body types.

This clothing shop ATE by Tatah, managed by proprietor Ma . Aleta “Tatah” dela Calzada, is also popular for its on the spot alteration of its RTW pieces to the liking of clients.

However, with the ongoing pandemic, most of the shop’s  customers have found it more convenient to order their clothes online.

GETTING COMFORTABLE WITH CHALLENGES
After spending 25 years in the sales and marketing field,  Tatah decided to give the clothing business a try.

Tatah always enjoyed sewing in her youth. So, after being let go by the company where she worked due to redundancy, she decided to pursue her passion.

In 2014, she established the shop Alter-to-Enhance or ATE by Tatah in Cebu City.

ATE now has three branches in Cebu and one in Katipunan, Quezon City to cater to clients based in Metro Manila.

Initially, the idea was to have a tailoring shop wherein clients could choose their preferred fabrics and design. In-house dressmakers would create and sew clothes for waiting customers.

Tatah admitted that at that time she had no formal training in tailoring and fashion design.
She recalled that they were doing a very simple type of sewing then.

However, the increase in customers compelled Tatah to take a short course on Fashion Business at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and a short styling course in London.

After finishing the short courses abroad, she then decided to enroll at the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Kapatid Mentor Micro Enterprise (KMME) Program.

According to Tatah, she learned a lot about managing her business at the KMME course. “We were taught how to handle human resource problems, managing employees, and coming up with a company policy.”

LURING A POST PANDEMIC MARKET
ATE by Tatah used to be a part of many local tourists’ itinerary.

“When we started, we already had a lot of clients and most of them were from Class A bracket in Cebu and they were the ones who were also promoting the dress shop and bringing their friends in from Manila, Tatah disclosed.

“It’s one of the reasons why we decided to open in Manila because of the demand. We always gave them good service and we made sure they had fun in the shop so that they would spread the word,” Tatah said.

Participating in DTI’s KMME program has enabled Tatah to collaborate with other entrepreneurs. She shared that she has met a lot of DTI mentees who sell shoes and accessories, which opened opportunities for collaboration. She shared that one of the mentors during the finance session of KMME is now ATE’s bookkeeper.

A few years into the business, Tata still believes that ATE is still a startup, with lots of opportunities and improvements to look forward.

“As business grows bigger, managing all aspects of the enterprise becomes a challenge. I think we need a good inventory management system to make sure that we control everything. Until we’re there, we will continue to be a startup,” Tatah said.

Nowadays, the shop’s apparel designs take into consideration the company’s current needs such as face masks, hoodie dresses and blouses that cover the head and face.

MENTEE TO MENTOR
Tatah has come a long way.  She currently mentors budding entrepreneurs in becoming successful in business.

She continues to be involved in different programs of the DTI like the Kapatid Mentor ME (KMME) program and DOLE’s Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board.

“I’ve been telling startups like myself that there are a lot of offerings from the government that they don’t know about,” said Tatah.

As for future plans, she is open to try franchising once they are able to standardize every aspect of their operations.

For her, getting into the business industry means being open to learning all the time.

“For those who are teachable, when you get the chance, attend as many seminars and trainings. Check out the programs that the government is offering. As long as you’re guided, you will be able to focus well on your business and product development,” said Tatah.

Currently, she is trying out the different digital marketing platforms available such as Shopee, Tiktok, and Facebook.
